It’s been a quiet few months over at the Community Farm, but the sun is out and we’re ready to kick off the 2024 season! This is our third year of growing veggies (and herbs 😉 for the community and we’ve learned so much from all of you: how you like to grow, when you want to volunteer, which of you is allergic to poison ivy -eek! – and of course, what you like to eat! The goal for this year is to reinforce what we’ve all built together so we can keep it going for seasons to come.
In 2024 the farm crew (along with you!) will focus on:
Productivity
Let’s put those 30 beds to work! We want to give each crop the care and attention it needs to produce the most healthy food possible. We can do this through: reliable irrigation, pest management, and sustainable harvest
Distribution
The u-pick garden will continue to be open 24/7 for all neighbors that need access to fresh veggies + we’ll be ramping up our Community Shares distribution program in June, more fresh, local food for our pantries.
Community
Let’s gather at the farm more often, right? Monthly work days are great – and needed – but there are plenty of opportunities to get together amidst the garden beds throughout the season. Got ideas? Share them!
The first farm workday is planned for Saturday, April 27 10 AM – 12 PM and you can catch up with the crew for our season opening fundraiser at Subversive Brewing in Catskill on Friday, April 5 from 5-8 PM. As always, they’ll be food, music, and good times at all farm events. And don’t worry, we’ll remind you about both of these as they get closer.
Drop in a comment on this post or send the crew an email at athenscommunityfarm[at]gmail.com with any feedback or thoughts for the new season. We can’t wait to dig in the dirt with you all!
